The Internet of Things (IoT) is an ecosystem in which objects or devices connect to the Internet for remote control. During the processes taking place within the framework of IoT the necessary data is collected, processed and sent to enable item management.  Selected areas of IoT application include the intelligent environment, housing, industry, transport and Intelligent city.

For several years, IoT has been at the heart of Cisco initiatives through the development of research, solutions and business strategies. The company expects that by 2020 over 50 billion phones will be connected to the Internet. This will mean an increase in the complexity of the network, the amount of transmitted data and possible security gaps. In the face of such transformations that the Internet of Things will introduce over the next few years, Laércio Albuquerque, the CEO of Cisco Brazil, has announced that the company’s global strategies will cover both the network security increase as well as data processing in the vicinity of connected devices.

This is to be achieved by Cisco Kinetic – an analytical platform that was created to secure these devices as well as the entire network through means of artificial intelligence (AI).

Cisco Kinetic will be responsible for collecting information from various IoT devices. This data will then be transmitted through a secure Cisco network that will detect anomalies or malware by analysing information made by AI. “Imagine a stand-alone car that needs to stop in an emergency,” says Marcelo Silva, commercial director of Cisco Brazil. This decision must be made quickly and without undue delay, so it is necessary to include analytical capabilities within such a vehicle.

Thanks to the Cisco concept, data stays at its source, without having to move it to remote applications simultaneously allowing users to control privacy, security, and data ownership. The platform plays a central role in enforcing the rules set by information owners, providing selected data for private, public or other endpoints chosen by the user. Cisco security technologies are integrated as part of a comprehensive IoT platform. The company changed the name of the solution from Smart + Connected Digital Platform to Kinetic, offering a set of tools and guidelines for building smart city structures.

According to Cisco, Kinetic is a cloud-based platform that helps clients extract, calculate and transfer data from connected components to an IoT application to provide better results and services. This platform is an important milestone for Cisco and customers who want to unlock the value of data generated by machines, things and connected spaces.
